Charlie & Jane and the Original
Wigan Pier Bar
How Charlie & Janes Wigan Pier Began
In 1989, Owning a Timeshare in mainland Spain, we exchanged our two
weeks for Tenerife, loved the experience and again exchanged the following
year and went back.
It was after the second visit in July 1990, we thought long and hard
about starting a new life there, I had a good Job of 15 years with,
as it was then, National Power in Aberthaw power station and Jane
had an equally good job as a sales executive.
But the draw was too strong and I started night classes studying spanish,
we also put our house up for sale. We went back to Tenerife to look
at businesses primarily at the maintenance end, and secondly at bar
businesses for Jane as she worked and ran pubs in Salford, a bar business
was second as I was a little shy and reserved, better suited to a
non public serving profession.
After looking into the maintenance side, we decided it was not the
best course to follow, so we started looking at bars for sale in our
budget, nothing hit a chord until on the last day, with the last estate
agent of four, we found this bar out of the way, tucked away on a
corner of a complex, we both liked it and I strangely had this feeling
in my heart... If I was going to do something totally against my character
it would be here.
We put down a deposit with the owner (he was in no hurry to sell as
the bar had been up for sale for many months, so a few more months
did not matter). We went back to the UK with a new vigour to sell
our house, we succeeded, so in November of 1991 the bar 'Charlie n
Jane's Wigan Pier' was born, and as they say.... "The rest is History"
